Finance Minister Unveils Export-Import Bank (EXIM) in Islamabad


The inauguration of the Export-Import Bank of Pakistan (EXIM) in Islamabad today by Caretaker Minister for Finance Dr. Shamshad Akhtar signifies a crucial stride in fortifying foreign trade and fostering economic development in the nation. Dr. Akhtar expressed, "The commencement of EXIM is a noteworthy achievement that will enrich the banking and trade finance landscape of Pakistan," during the inaugural event.


In addition, the Finance Minister stressed the global importance of EXIM, highlighting that these institutions facilitated an astonishing $2.50 trillion in trade finance in the previous year.


Dr. Shamshad Akhtar underlined the vital role of export credit loans, providing exporters with access to competitively priced financing, and delineating the diverse array of goods supported by EXIMs. She also underscored how EXIM's guarantee, credit insurance, and loan services could enhance the competitiveness of Pakistani exporters on the global stage.

Pakistan Secures World Bank Nod for USD 350 Million Funding


Islamabad: In a development reported on December 21, the World Bank (WB) has approved a USD 350 million funding package designated for budget financing in Pakistan.


According to the provided information, the World Bank Executive Directors Board unanimously supported the USD 350 million financing for the Second Resilient Institutions for Sustainable Economy (RISE-II) operation, as conveyed in a press statement released on Wednesday.


This approval, which encountered a two-year delay, is linked to weakened economic fundamentals, the absence of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) umbrella, and uncertainties surrounding upcoming elections. The Washington-based lender proceeded with the board’s endorsement only after obtaining clarity on these aspects.


Najy Benhassine, the World Bank Country Director for Pakistan, underscored the urgency of implementing fiscal and structural reforms to restore macroeconomic balance and lay the groundwork for sustainable growth. He emphasized that RISE-II builds upon earlier reforms in tax, energy, and the business climate, aiming to generate additional revenues, enhance expenditure targeting, and promote competition and investment.


The approved loans from the World Bank are directed towards improving fiscal management, enhancing regulatory frameworks for growth and competitiveness, boosting debt transparency and management, and broadening the tax base while reducing distortions in tax policy.

Gwadar: A significant leap in the region's healthcare sector was marked by the recent opening of the Pak-China Friendship Hospital in Gwadar, a collaborative effort under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), as reported on December 20.


In an update by Adnan Khan, Socio-Economic Development Specialist at the Pak-China Economic Corridor Centre of Excellence, upcoming CPEC initiatives, including the transformative Green Corridor, Digital Corridor, and Health Corridor, were outlined. These initiatives aim to usher in a new era of development in Pakistan, with a primary emphasis on modernizing the nation's healthcare infrastructure.


Beginning operations on December 4, the hospital, backed by a total investment of USD 100 million from the Chinese government, symbolizes the strong bilateral relations between China and Pakistan. Spanning 68 acres, the 300-bed hospital was developed in alignment with the Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) Business Plan. Specialist Khan detailed the hospital's six blocks, housing modern facilities, equipment, and machinery for medical, residential, nursing, paramedical institute, medical college, and central laboratory purposes, showcasing a comprehensive healthcare approach.


Specialist Khan further highlighted that the hospital would significantly reduce the necessity for residents to travel long distances for specialized medical treatments. The broad range of services, covering primary care to specialized treatments, is anticipated to bring about a notable enhancement in the overall health outcomes of the region.


Underlining the strategic significance of the Pak-China Friendship Hospital, Specialist Khan stated, "The establishment of Pak-China Friendship Hospital underscores the transformative impact of international collaborations in addressing vital aspects of public welfare." Equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology and staffed by highly skilled healthcare professionals, the facility is positioned to elevate healthcare standards in Gwadar to an international level.
