Government Mulls Over Wealth Tax on Movable Assets and Taxation System Amendments


Islamabad: The government is actively contemplating the introduction of a wealth tax on moveable assets, in addition to proposed amendments to the taxation systems governing the retail, agriculture, and real estate sectors. This development was reported by a reliable news source on October 1.


In pursuit of an ambitious tax collection target of PKR 9.2 trillion set by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), government officials have confirmed their commitment to achieving this goal. Simultaneously, they aim to elevate the tax-to-GDP ratio to 15%, which translates to PKR 13 trillion, within the next two years.


Furthermore, the government is contemplating the rationalization of the Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on immovable property, signaling a potential increase in its rate as part of a broader strategy to enhance the country's tax-to-GDP ratio.


To bolster tax compliance, the FBR is diligently working on the formulation of a comprehensive documentation law. If a consensus is reached, there is a possibility that an ordinance will be promulgated to facilitate this process. Additionally, the FBR is exploring opportunities to simplify tax returns and withholding tax regimes, aiming to streamline the tax collection process for greater efficiency.

FBR Grants Extension for Income Tax Return Filing Deadline Until October 31


Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has decided to extend the deadline for filing income tax returns for the tax year 2023 until October 31, 2023. This announcement was made via the FBR's official Twitter account in response to requests from trade organizations and tax bar associations. It was also emphasized that this extension is final, and there will be no further extensions granted for filing tax returns.


The need for this extension arose due to a combination of financial and technical challenges, including a newly discovered IT glitch in the IRIS system. The extension request was supported by Tax Advisers, Chartered Accountant Firms, and Tax Experts. Mr. Ghulam Bilal Javed, Provincial President of the Traders Alliance Federation, and Mr. Malik Meher Ali, Provincial President of Markazi Tanzeem-e-Tajiran, made appeals to the Federal Government. They pointed out that the FBR had already updated the Income Tax Rules 2002 to address these issues.


Furthermore, in an impressive financial achievement, the FBR reported that it had exceeded its collection target for the first quarter of the current financial year. The FBR collected Rs. 2,041 billion, surpassing the target of Rs. 1,978 billion by Rs. 63 billion. In addition, for the month of September 2023 alone, the FBR collected Rs. 834 billion, exceeding the target of Rs. 794 billion. It's worth noting that refunds of Rs. 37 billion were granted during the month, compared to Rs. 18 billion in September 2022.


Considering the prevailing circumstances and the nation's economic well-being, the FBR has made the decision to extend the deadline for one month, providing taxpayers with the necessary time and flexibility to meet their tax obligations.


This extension offers a crucial opportunity for individuals and businesses to ensure compliance with tax regulations while taking into account the unique challenges and developments of the current financial landscape.

Islamabad: In a significant development, Jawad Sohrab Malik, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Overseas Pakistanis, has inaugurated "Support Desks for Overseas Pakistanis" within the premises of the Islamabad Capital Territory Administration (ICT) offices and at the Capital Development Authority's (CDA) One Window facility in Islamabad, as reported by a credible news source.


This initiative is designed to bolster support for overseas Pakistanis and address their concerns effectively. The collaboration between CDA Chairman and SAPM Malik has led to the official launch of these support desks, which will commence their operations starting from the upcoming Monday.

Massive PKR 8 Billion Project Initiated to Tackle Drainage Issues on Lahore's Walton Road


Lahore: In a collaborative effort between the Punjab Government and the Central Business District (CBD), an ambitious PKR 8 billion water drainage project has been launched to combat the persistent problem of flooding along Walton Road, as reported by a reliable source on September 28.


As per the disclosed information, Punjab CM Mohsin Naqvi made the announcement regarding this billion-rupee project during his recent inspection of two other significant infrastructure projects: the Khalid Butt Chowk Underpass and the Ghora Chowk Defence Mor Flyover. The new project is set to be completed within a swift 120-day timeframe.


During his media address, CM Naqvi underscored the urgency of addressing the long-standing challenge of rainwater drainage in the Walton Road area. He revealed that authorities have already initiated discussions with the Cantonment Board for a collaborative approach to resolve this issue. In addition to this development, he also shared that the Khalid Butt Chowk Underpass was nearing completion, with plans to open it to the public next month.


Furthermore, CM Naqvi assured the public that the Ghora Chowk Flyover project would be completed ahead of schedule. He emphasized the government's commitment to expeditiously finish both projects while maintaining stringent quality standards.
