The Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) has intensified its efforts to safeguard the metropolitan populations of Lahore and Sheikhupura from the devastating impacts of seasonal flooding. As part of a massive engineering initiative, RUDA is working day and night to accelerate the construction of protective embankments along both banks of the River Ravi. This project is a cornerstone of the broader Ravi Riverfront Urban Development Project, designed to modernize the region while ensuring the safety of millions of residents who live in the river's vicinity.
The core of this flood mitigation strategy involves the construction of a 46-kilometer-long flood protection bund. According to official reports, these embankments will stand 20 feet high, providing a robust barrier against the overflowing waves of the River Ravi. Following the alarming flood levels witnessed in 2025, which caused widespread fear among the local communities, the authority has prioritized the completion of a preliminary protective bund. The goal is to finish this initial phase by June 30th of this year to provide immediate security before the next monsoon season.
A key technical aspect of the project is the "channelization" of the river. RUDA engineers have designated a 1-kilometer wide corridor for the river's flow. By keeping the water contained within this managed channel, the embankments on the right and left sides will effectively shield the urban settlements of Lahore and the industrial zones of Sheikhupura. Phase 1 of the project has already seen the completion of a 3-kilometer stretch near Hudiara Maraka, extending from the Ravi Syphon toward the Hudiara Drain.
Under the direct supervision and instructions of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, the pace of work has been significantly boosted. This project is not only a defensive measure against natural disasters but also a prerequisite for the future urban expansion of the city. By stabilizing the riverbanks and managing water flow, RUDA is laying the groundwork for sustainable infrastructure and high-quality real estate development along the riverfront. This 46-kilometer channelized river system represents one of Pakistan’s most vital civil engineering projects, ensuring that the "City of Gardens" remains protected for generations to come.

راوی اربن ڈویلپمنٹ اتھارٹی (RUDA) لاہور اور شیخوپورہ کی لاکھوں کی آبادی کو سیلاب کے خطرات سے بچانے کے لیے دن رات کوشاں ہے۔ اس عظیم الشان منصوبے کے تحت دریائے راوی کے دونوں کناروں پر 46 کلومیٹر طویل حفاظتی پشتے تعمیر کیے جا رہے ہیں تاکہ سیلابی پانی کو منظم طریقے سے گزارا جا سکے۔ یہ منصوبہ راوی ریور فرنٹ اربن ڈویلپمنٹ پراجیکٹ کا ایک اہم حصہ ہے جس کا مقصد دریا کو چینلائز کرنا ہے۔ اس حکمت عملی کے تحت دریا کے لیے ایک کلومیٹر چوڑا کوریڈور مختص کیا گیا ہے، جس سے سیلاب کی صورت میں پانی آبادیوں میں داخل ہونے کے بجائے اپنے مقررہ راستے پر رہے گا۔ اتھارٹی کے مطابق 20 فٹ بلند حفاظتی بند کی تعمیر کا کام تیزی سے جاری ہے اور ابتدائی مرحلہ 30 جون تک مکمل کر لیا جائے گا۔ وزیراعلیٰ پنجاب مریم نواز کی خصوصی ہدایات پر اس منصوبے کی رفتار کو مزید تیز کر دیا گیا ہے تاکہ مستقبل کی شہری ترقی اور عوامی تحفظ کو یقینی بنایا جا سکے۔
