e=mc2: 103 years later, Einstein's proven right

PARIS (AFP) – It's taken more than a century, but Einstein's celebrated formula e=mc2 has finally been corroborated, thanks to a heroic computational effort by French, German and Hungarian physicists.

A brainpower consortium led by Laurent Lellouch of France's Centre for Theoretical Physics, using some of the world's mightiest supercomputers, have set down the calculations for estimating the mass of protons and neutrons, the particles at the nucleus of atoms.

"Until now, this has been a hypothesis," France's National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) said proudly in a press release.

"It has now been corroborated for the first time."

It would be logically incorrect to say "Until now, this has been a hypothesis... It has now been corroborated for the first time".

Relativity is basically a couple of intuitively compelling assumptions expressed in several different mathematical forms.

Since pure mathematical tranforms need no experimental verification, if one mathematical form is verified experimentally, that adds same logical weight to all derivable mathematical forms.

Relativity's several different mathematical forms have been experimentally verified with sufficient precision in hundreds, if not thousands, of different instances.

In fact it can be argued that at least one test of special relativity (and thus E=mc^2) was known experimentally valid even before derivation of special relativity (that 'the speed of light is constant regardless of speed of observer').

Also, it may be irrelevant but from scientific perspective, Albert Einstein has made lot greater contribution to sciences in form of generalized relativity than the usually 'celebrated' special relativity or E=mc^2.

Perhaps a better example for E=mc^2 proof is energy release / created due to fusion or fission reactions. The proof already existed before it was derived mathematically.
