Interest is haraam and is one of the major sins in Islam, which can never become halaal at all. There is no argument or difference of opinion on this issue. Whoever makes a difference or dispute on this issue has differed from Allaah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

The seriousness of “interest” is shown by Aayaat of the Qura'an and many Ahadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):

Allaah says;
278. "O you who believe! Be afraid of Allâh and give up what remains (due to you) from Ribâ (usury) (from now onward), if you are (really) believers." Al-Baqarah.

And Allaah says:
275. "Those who eat Ribâ (usury) will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaitân (Satan) leading him to insanity. That is because they say: Trading is only like Ribâ (usury), whereas Allâh has permitted trading and forbidden Ribâ (usury). So whosoever receives an admonition from his Lord and stops eating Ribâ (usury) shall not be punished for the past; his case is for Allâh (to judge); but whoever returns (to Ribâ (usury)), such are the dwellers of the Fire they will abide therein." Al-Baqarah.

And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“a man's eating of a dirham of interest is worse than his committing adultery thirty six times” reported by Imam Ahmad.

And he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) cursed the one who takes the interest, who gives it, who writes the contract and the two who witness it, and he said these are all equal. Reported by Muslim from Jabir (may Allaah be pleased with him).

One common question is that, is interest permissible for those who live in a non-Muslim country?

Whether we live in a Muslim country or a non-Muslim country interest can never become permissible, in fact living in this country has a much higher standard for many people than if they had to live in a Muslim country. And people who make the interest permissible in this country would do the same in a Muslim country because the economic system of Muslim countries is no different from non-Muslim countries.

May Allaah help and guide us to do all that He is pleased with.

Very intersting debate. We are talking about interest and giving quotations from Hadith and Quran. Can the writer tell whether the intention of Quran or Hadith was with reference to present day Interest or something else. If the reference was to present day interest , then what about others sins which have far more serious consequences in the society than interest. Consequences of intetrest could be just economic to the society. But look at other sins like INJUSTICE , Heroin , iliteracy , unequal distribution of weath in society, one family living for entire month on Rs. 6000, and so on & on.
I would ask the respectable readers of this site that the MUSLIMS have suffered and are suffering beacuse of the closed mindedness and misinterpretation of quran and hadith by our mullahs who predominantly are educated on a 200 yeras old course and syllabus.They even do not know where the moden world is today and are moving in circles around petty things.
The critics of the interest should come up with a practical solution to the problem. Not just criticising but to suggest a practical alternate.In today's world suppose a needy needs money. what should he do. where should he go.
My intention is not to heart anyone's feeling but to have a healthy debate.

Brothers,
Eating Riba is Haramm, there is no doubt in it but there is differencs in openion for any one who is bound to pay interest/riba.
For example in his mortgage payment, bank loans, overdrafts and may be in insurances like car insurance, home insurance which is must in foreign countries.
Mr.Javed Ahmed Gamdi has explained it very well, may be he must have something about this on his website.

Guys,
Give us a break. This is not a religious forum. I am pretty sure you will find out million of forums for religious preaching. To be honest, we really don’t need this discussion this forum.

I would strongly suggest administrator to delete this post in your early convenient time.

we should have an alternate system, untill that come financial sytems cant be run. If all islamic Scholors and Financial experts sit together and Broad mindedly make some Solution we should accept.
Honestly I myself believe that any soultion will not be much different than current system.

Salam all visitors. as per above discussion topic i would like to add some thing related to that. I fully agree with who mentioned rulling regarding interest he give us knowledge from Quran and hadith and its related to our businesses we know most of the peoples takes loans to built homes, purchase cars etc and he make good effort for us to notify that we should avoided that way. and totally disagree with the "Muslim" who's thinking clearly look like non Muslim who's is telling us that our society is not a society level of the non Muslim societies due to the mullas. and telling us what about others issues rather than interst issues listen mr. Muslim we are not failed due to not using interest but only leaving our path which included all thing which our Allah and Prophet(peace be upon him)told and we ignored including interest we are not discussing here all issues but one which started "interest" so first we have to focus on it rather than all because everything done step by step not together.We should watch and think over it rather then denying and telling our own ideas. please note that as they said these are old rules we should make a new rues regarding current situation how dam shit is that its mean he and we know better than our Almighty Allah who even know before our creation and written down in lohe mahfooz what will be everyone will do and what not he know everything from start till end. and his mean that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also don't know about future if they know they don't mentioned that in Quran and Hadith. Quran is for all world from past nations and for this and for coming till end and its perfect for all the world previous all rules in previous boobs been amended or changed and our Quran the final order for everyone... if u cant accept this u are not Muslim.. as per our religion its straight away deny of the order as iblees did.. so whenever u told anything and make yourself respectable for others just see in your side what u know abut that what's your knowledge what's your characteristics and wt u have to say then u should interfere in any matter this is not a small matter this is our Almighty Allah and our Last Prophet (peace be upon him ) matter and our dean matter not gen. musharaf and zardarii..it will be asked at the day of end. so be careful ..
another thing compulsory to mentioned here is that as per your kind information the interest based economy is already failed in all the world.. including big countries as fall of world crises u can see and it cant be fruitful for anyone because its laanat..so utny pawon philao jitni chadar ho... and one thing for mr. jameel we all know that is not religious site its property website but when we are seeing that there is some confusion between in our Muslim brothers knowledge we should ignore all the work and do first this to solve this problem because at the end we don't have to tell property updates but this must be asked how did u helped some one's didn't u said some one when they need to tell because we here to give exam of our lives and this is our first priority to do right and do for others not for ourselves only. Allah showed us the right path to follow and we have to follow and remain on it till death and shall be successful. Allah give us success in this world and in ahirat(amin)..sorry if i hurt some one feelings but be careful especially our religious matters its our everything...see in past what we were only one person Muhammad (peace be upon him) changed this world with the help of Allah..and we were not powerful as much as we are today's.. see and read history...not devalue ourselves we are best because of our Allah..wt we need is to be please always try to do and help others and never think that u r king...Allah is King for all universe. no any one. Fee Amanillah..

you religious guys just say "Interest is haram", my question is: "interest on what"? According to my research inflation is also haram, non-regulted printing of new currency is also haram. For a principle of Sharia to be implemented on a certain issue, all the principles and criterias have to be met.

I have written a detailed analysis on this topic few weeks ago, but until now no one has answered it. You just keep quoting half truths, half sentenses, half Ayats, etc.

Hamid, Toronto replied on Saturday, July 4, 2009 05:39 PM

Totally I agree with Ali Bhai. First of all we should not discuss this topic on this forum. Secondly I have to admit it that we cannot change fundamental thoughts of hardliner. I would called them “Neem Khakeem Khatra Jaan”

I would strongly suggest to my brothers please please talk logically do not called “non-muslim” to other if you are disagree with his/her thoughts.

Here is simple logical example. Let say you have 100,000 rupees on Jan 2000 and you decided to put this money under the bed instead of depositing in the bank or investing anywhere.

At the end year 2009, the value of 100,000 will be 38,000. Here is simple math.

I would account Annual inflation just for 10%. At the end of each year your 100,000 rupees will be as follow:
2001= 90,000
2002= 81,000
2003= 73,000
2004=64,000
2005=58,000
2006=52,000
2007=47,000
2008=42,000
2009=38,000

I would like to see ONLY logical answer here. NO RELIGIOUS REFERENCE PLEASE.

Dear fellows,
Our understanding / interpretation about the “subject matter” can never ever supersede the following
1. Quran
2. Sunnah / Hadith
3. Four Imams
4. Renowned muftis, ulemas, religious scholars of the time.

Once we come to know that all the above intensely denounce this curse (whether be of any kind or type), being a true believer there remains no space for us at all to argue upon it, favour it, or look for logics to justify it.Instead it becomes obligatory for us to bow down to the divine proscription.

Jameel – Even not having an alternate system to run the economic affaires in a fully Shariah compliant way, does not by ant standards legitimize dealing in Riba for a true Muslim.Pork never becomes legitimate in the absence of halal meat.

Ali3 – I agree, currency printing has to be backed up by gold, silver or some tangible commodity. Unregulated currency printing leads to inflation and you are trying to make a point that to counter that inflation, interest stands legitimate. Brother this logic in itself is absurd as none of the banks / schemes adjust the interest rates in line with the %age hike of inflation.Meaning even through “interest” real money value is not maintained.Imran has said it right that it is only and only this curse that has caused the collapse of global economic system and brought it down like a cards house.BTW you never looked confused over the issue while defending aggressively "arsu" againt "abj" in condemning this curse in one of yor previous posts.
Hope it helps

The Islamic Solution replied on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 01:57 PM

The Islamic solution to the issue of interest rests upon two basic principles:

(1) If an individual wishes to lend money to another in order to help the latter, this act must be based on “brotherly principles” and it is absolutely unacceptable to charge any interest in such a case. It is not helping another individual to put him into a cycle of debt where he has to pay more than what they borrowed. This principle applies as well to Islamic international relations. If this important principle were applied today, countries would truly give “aid” and assistance to other countries, rather than sucking them into a pattern of dependency and debt burden.

(2) If an individual wishes to use his money to make more money, then he must be willing to put his money at risk. In other words, he cannot guarantee for himself a fixed return (whose amount keeps growing over time) regardless of the result of the investment that his money is used for. If he puts his money at risk, he is deserving of some share of the profits. However, this also means that he must accept losses if losses occur. This is a system that is based on justice. It also has numerous benefits to it. The one who invests becomes concerned about the results of his investment and cannot demand his “pound of flesh” regardless of what may occur to the debtor.

This Islamic solution works for individuals as well as for society as a whole. Banks are essentially financial intermediaries. They take money from those who have excess money (savings) and turn it over to those who need money for investment purposes. Interest is not necessary for such a system to work. The bank and its depositors (shareholders) invest, rather than simply loan, their holdings. The money is put at risk and the return to the depositors will be based on the amount of profits made in the respective investments. Under normal circumstances of a growing economy, if the bank is big enough and it diversifies its portfolio, the bank is virtually “guaranteed” a positive return on its total investments. Thus, those who invest their money with the bank will also receive a positive return on their money without it being guaranteed or fixed ahead of time.

Numerous “Islamic” financial institutions have been set up throughout the world today. They have been established on the principle of avoiding interest and some of them have flourished.

The Ills of Interest replied on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 03:08 PM

Islam is not the only religion that has banned interest and considered it a despicable practice. The prohibition of interest? at least to some extent?is a well-known law in both the Old and the New Testaments of the Bible. In numerous places in the Old Testament, reference has been made to “usury” or “interest.”

Deuteronomy 23:19-20 reads:

“Thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of victuals, usury of any thing that is lent upon usury: Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon usury; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land whither thou goest to possess it” (King James Version).

In Jeremiah 15:10, the Prophet complains that he is being cursed although he has never done anything such as take interest, meaning that such curses would be appropriate for him if he were someone who took interest. Perhaps one of the harshest verses in the Old Testament concerning interest is Ezekiel 18:13:

“Hath given forth upon interest, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.”

Similarly, Exodus 22:25 states:

“If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury” (King James Version).

The Ills of Interest:

Perkins’ work has now been followed up by A Game as Old as Empire: The Secret World of Economic Hit Men and the Web of Global Corruption edited by Steven Hiatt. Hiatt writes,

Debt keeps Third World countries under control. Dependent on aid, loan reschedulings, and debt rollovers to survive?never mind actually develop? they have been forced to restructure their economies and rewrite their laws to meet conditions laid down in IMF structural adjustment programs and World Bank conditionalities.

The current debt situation, with the major role that interest is playing in it, is potentially very devastating for the world as a whole. In Global Trends 2015, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) recognized:

The rising tide of the global economy will create many economic winners, but it will not lift all boats. [It will] spawn conflicts at home and abroad ensuring an ever-wider gap between regional winners and losers than exists today. [Globalization's] evolution will be rocky, marked by chronic financial volatility and a widening economic divide. Regions, countries and groups feeling left behind will face deepening economic stagnation, political instability and cultural alienation. They will foster political, ethnic, ideological and religious extremism, along with the violence that often accompanies it.

Noreena Hertz has an excellent chapter in her work, The Debt Threat: How debt is destroying the developing world. and threatening us all, delineating many of the dangers that the massive debt?and, again, which would not be as massive without the ever-growing aspect of interest?poses for the world today. She details the dangers of extremism, terrorism, depletion of the world’s natural resources, and more. To cite just one aspect, she writes:

Debt’s ugly progeny?poverty, inequality, and injustice?are also called upon to justify, and even legitimize, acts of the greatest violence. Only a few weeks after the World Trade Center was attacked, leading African commentator Michael Fortin wrote: “We have to recognize that this deplorable act of aggression may have been, at least in part, an act of revenge on the part of desperate and humiliated people, crushed by the weight of the economic oppression practiced by the peoples of the West.” Fortin’s language?”crushed,” “oppression,” “desperate,” “humiliated”?is deliberately evocative. And it is manifestly clear that there is an audience with whom such words powerfully resonate.

In this context, the UNDP (1998) predicted that if the external debt of the 20 poorest countries of the world was written off, it could save the lives of 20 million people before the year 2000. In other words, it means that uncancelled debt was responsible for the deaths of 130,000 children a week up until the year 2000.

Ken Livingston, Mayor of London, claimed that global capitalism kills more people each year then were killed by Adolf Hitler. He blamed the IMF and World Bank for deaths of millions due to their refusal to ease the debt burden. Susan George stated that every year since 1981 between 15 and 20 million people died unnecessarily due to debt burden “because Third World governments have had to cut back on clean water and health programs to meet their repayments.”

Debt, with its increasing amount of interest compounded upon it, is dangerous for any nation because it means loss of sovereignty and control. This aspect, incidentally, is no accident. Lesser developed countries?especially their elites and corrupt rulers?are not free of guilt when it comes to the issue of the debt that they have accumulated. At the same time, if they did not borrow and get in debt, pressure would definitely be put on them to do so. Caufield noted:

Thus it has been with the World Bank; refunding operations have become more and more of the total of its lending. The result has been an accumulation of debt by the Bank’s borrowers?and a gradual loss of sovereignty as well. No creditor is willing to keep refunding forever without asserting some control over the way the debtor conducts business. In earlier times, the great powers did not hesitate to use military force to bend recalcitrant debtors to their will. In his classic essay, “Public Debts,” published in 1887, the American economist Henry Carter Adams wrote that “the granting of foreign credits is the first step toward the establishment of an aggressive foreign policy, and under certain conditions, leads inevitably to conquest and occupation.”

The Bank’s approach to its debtors is not so crude. Instead of sending in the Marines, it offers advice on how countries should manage their finances, make their laws, provide services to their people, and conduct themselves in the international market. Its powers of persuasion are great, due to the universal conviction that, should it decide to ostracize a borrower, all other major national and international powers will follow its lead. Thus, by the excessive lending?born of an underlying inconsistency its mission?the Bank has added to its own power and depleted that of its borrowers.

John Perkins’ now famous Confessions of an Economic Hit Man details contemporary economic intrigues. While describing his job of evaluating projects, he wrote:

The unspoken aspect of every one of these projects was that they were intended to create large profits for the contractors, and to make a handful of wealthy and influential families in the receiving countries very happy, while assuring the long-term financial dependence and therefore the political loyalty of governments around the world. The larger the loan, the better. The fact that the debt burden placed on a country would deprive its poorest citizens of health, education, and other social services for decades to come was not taken into consideration.

a chawdhry - answer to the first part of your question has been given and nicely elaborated by "The islamic solutions". Believe me the equation is very simple for those who really want to undestand. About your second part, yes you can deliver "this money" to the needy and poor, and will definitely get the reward from Allah SWT for your act.Further in our country if you want to stay away from this filth, you can just intimate your bank not to add interest in your ammount and they honor your request.I know a lot who avoid it by doing so.

A Choudhry's question no:2
Secondly, iwill take interest or profit whatever bank gives to me, and i don't use it but rather give it to the poor; is that ok then.

Answer:
Depositing money in usury-taking banks is not permissible. If one fears for his money than he must deposit one's money in the banks that act according to Islamic Shari'a. If such banks are not available then, based on the rule necessities have no laws, one may deposit his money in a current account that
does not gain usury/interest in usury-taking banks

If one cannot do so and has deposited money in a saving account, he should get rid of the interest earned since it is hateful money. So, it should not be used for oneself and for his family members. If one leaves the interest for the bank it will give it to Jewish or Christian organisations that will use it in evil purposes, so one should not leave that money to the bank. Instead it should be spent on needy Muslims, to be given charity organisations, Islamic schools and in good projects.
Allah knows best.

Bank ac and Interest -2 replied on Thursday, July 9, 2009 07:37 AM

First of all, we should know that it is forbidden to deal with any bank whose transactions are based on interest and usury. It is not permissible in principle to open a bank account with such banks be it a saving account, or a current account or else, as by doing so one is helping them to subsist. Allaah says (which means): {Help you one another in virtue, righteousness and piety but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allaah. Verily, Allaah is Severe in punishment.}[Quran 5:2]. So it is forbidden to deal with a bank which deals with usury and interest except for a necessity, for example when there is no Islamic bank and one fears to lose his money, or that the customer has wages that he only could get through the bank. So in such cases it is permissible to open an account in the bank provided it is a current account without any interest. If the bank does not allow other accounts except saving accounts, then it is permissible due to the necessity. In this case the customer takes the interest but he should not spend it on himself or on whomever he is obliged to spend for, rather he should spend it in the public interest [of the Muslims] or on the poor and needy people with the intention of getting rid of this money, and not with the intention of gifting it, as Allaah is Tayyib (which implies purity) and He accepts only that which is pure. If your bank deals with interest and usury, so it is not permissible to take the interest whether its percentage is defined or undefined, as this is forbidden because the reality of the transaction between the bank and the customer is money lending and the contract is that of a loan contract. The client is the creditor and the bank is the debtor because the capital money is guaranteed by the bank, and the interest that the client takes is extra money on his capital money. Taking extra money when giving a loan is a forbidden interest and this is included in the saying of Allaah (which means): {Allaah has permitted trading and forbidden usury.}[Quran 2:275]. In addition to this the Prophet(pbuh)said: "Allaah has cursed the one who consumes Ribaa (i.e. usury or interest), the one who gives it to others, the one who writes it down and the one who witnesses it. He said: "All of them are equal in sin." [Muslim]
To conclude, we say that if this bank has an Islamic branch whose dealings are according to religious requirements and run by an Islamic committee, then it is permissible to take this profit and benefit from it from this Islamic branch as in such a case it is a result of a religious co-partnership or other religious transactions.
Allaah knows best.
