Dear all brothers,
Can you please answer of the following questions:
1. Which university is good for getting Engineering Degree in Lahore around Wapda Town area.
What is its fee ( no LUMS too expensive ).
2. Which degree is good and useful in future, Electrical Eng. (with which specialization), Mechanical Engr., Chemical Engr., Software Eng.
I am overseas returned and settled in Wapda Town, so needs this information for my son who is giving exam of F.Sc. in May.
What are your feedback about COMSATS, UOL, UMT,FAST,UET as I heard only these from one friend.
Please guide me with your best option and with reasonable fee structure as some Uni. are very expensive.

I would suggest Geoalogy engineering. This field is very popular in middle east, OPEC countries,and North America. Great scope in Pakistan as well. |

My vote would be for Industrial Engineering ( My Own Son is doing this right now from UOFT ).. Not sure if they have it in Pakistan or not but if they do, I believe that its worth as Supply Chain is covered under Industrial Engineering .

Dear Bilal,I would strongly recommend to go for Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.These two disciplines have plenty of scope inside the country and around the world too, specially in the Gulf.Talking about the best uni to get such a degree, UET beyond any doubt and then comes University of Engineering & Technology, Taxila.But it all depends on what percentage does your son secure in the FSc exams.Merits for these two disciplines are sky high, something around 85% can help your son getting into this institution.Mechanical Engineering is a very versatile field and covers fields like construction, oil and gas, automobiles, textile and much much more.
If he intends to choose elctrical, he should opt for electronics as it is much in demand as compared to power.Chemical engineering has got a very limited scope, specially in Pakistan.Software engineering, already saturated as more engineers are being generated compared to jobs available.Hope it helps and best of luck to your son. |

Thanks for all and Mr. Limo for guiding for course as Mech. E. or Elect. Engr in Electronics. I am thinking EE in Power as sone one said but as you said better is in Electronics, so will take it.
Now the question is if merit does not come as 85% then which uni. is the best option, such as UOL, COMSATS, UMT, SUPERIOR ETC.

UOL is ok but stands nowhere closer to the main two universities that i have mentioned earlier as far as the international recognition goes.If unfortunately such a situation arises than better compromise on disciplines (go for technologies with lower merit in the same unis, like chemical, architecture, CRP, mettalurgyetc) rather than getting degree from unis that are still struggling for their recognition.Because once you manage to enter UET, there are plenty of ways your son can change discipline internally, sometimes a swap with someone, sometimes few of taxila uni guys try n get migrated to UET lahore, thus threre exists a vacuum and that is normally filled by asking the lower technology guys from UET lahore who are willing to go to taxila.Chemical Engineering from Punjab Uni is also not a bad option if your son fails to enetr these main unis. |

I was in UET Taxila and left in 2000 in elect dept. Got into Taxila because I missed UET Lahore by a couple of marks. You cannot change your discipline once admitted AFAIK. One classmate went to UET Lahore from UET Taxila because some openings happened and he was next in line. Don't depend on changing discipline. It is very rare and difficult AFAIK.
Avoid Power. No one went into power. Electronics is very versatile. Based on your interest, you can focus on Hardware (VLSI), communications, even software.
My ranking of best universities (from a Rawalpindi perspective)
1. GIK or NUST
2. UET Lahore
3. UET Taxila
This is based on old knowledge. limo is correct in that you should target recognized universities. Also, please find and get in touch with the students who are graduating and who have graduated over the last couple of years. I remember that when I was in FSc, the tips from seniors and peers were more relevant and useful than what my parents knew (no fault of parents, its just how information flows)
Tell him to work hard and take his subjects seriously. I regret wasting a lot of my time doing nothing. He should mingle with the best and brightest in his class. Best of luck to you and your son! |

Thanks very much for sharing your experience. My daughter also applied for Canadian Medical College inside Qatar Foundation but could not qualify for the admission.
When I see a lot of Palestinians, Lebanese, Indians and other nationals, benefiting from Qatar Foundation and our kids are getting left behind, I do not feel right from inside of my heart!
Last time during admissions, I was able to see some Pakistani families with their kids but not very much as compared to our number in Qatar.
I heard that from next year some of the top Indian universities are also coming in Qatar Foundation.
I can bet that our universities are not even aware of this. Only Ripha has a dental college in UAE and I think SZABIST has also its presence in UAE but no one in Gulf is helping students like QF is doing.
I will call you this week end and we will explore the ways to inform Pakistanis as much we can, through embassy! |
