Dear Brothers,

I am an overseas Pakistani living in Abu Dhabi for the last 20 Years. I am planning to go back to Lahore for good in early next year. I will be having around Rs 3.5 Crores of savings. I would really appreciate if Brothers could advise me how and where to invest this amount to have reasonable return. I do not like to keep in bank and earn interest rather i would prefer to do some business. Is it possible to do some reasonable business with this amount with minimum risks. You expert opinions would be appreciated.

Mr.Bashir,

IF i was with that capital,i would have gone for FARMING.

Muhammad Saad replied on Sunday, December 19, 2010 09:25 AM

Brother you can start many businesses but do only that which is according to your experience and knowledge. It would reduce the risk. In order to have an idea that what kind of business you can do with approximate budget go to SMEDA (small and medium enterprises development authority). They have very good pre-feasibility studies available on their site to download for different kind of business. Download those which attracts you and within your budget. There prices are slightly on lower side because of ever changing prices in pakistan but the overall information is great and very helpful. All the best and may Allah be with you. I pray that you succeed in whatever business you would. It would give jobs to poor people of my nation. Allah unko rozi dainty ki khatir aap ka risk wasi ker day ga. Just stick with teachings of Islam in doing business and success would be yours.

Dear Mr. Bashir.

I am also in Abu Dhabi since 1978. During my stay here I have noted that the success rate of people like us doing business back home is very very low because of our long absence from our society in Pakistan. I suggest as below.
1. Do not convert your capital to Pak. Rupees for the time being.
2. After reaching Pakistan wait for a reasonable time ( Say a year or so ), explore the business oppertunities, decide & start at a small scale.
3. Creat your safety net by investing some of your capital into real estate from where you can get some rental income regularly.
4. Do not go into partnership with anybody.

GIVE HALF THE MONEY TO CHARITY LIKE EDHI CENTRE OR MAKE YOUR OWN CHARITY ORGANIZATION AND SPEND MONEY ON THE WELFARE OF PEOPLE.
WITH OTHER HALF START BUSINEES

Azad K replied on Sunday, December 19, 2010 10:42 AM

You could put the money in a engro rupaiya certificate for 3 years that will give you 14.5% return a year. So for your 3.5 crores you could get 50 lacs a year. And in the meanwhile you could explore business opportunities in Pakistan, which has a lot of potential in the long run. But don't rush into anything.

Ehtesham ulhaq replied on Sunday, December 19, 2010 11:17 AM

My Dear, I would suggest you to keep very low profile, I would say this amount of money is enough for your whole life to come, you must not be in hurry and after the quick money. Relax, wait, see, talk to people about your intentions, judge the ideas but never disclose your net worth in term of amount available with you. Start with 30-40 lacs do not take the profit out of it and let it be in the business and try to learn the trade for atleast 1 year, if you feel comfortable and increase in the volume of your business then increase your investment. Again don't go for quick and big money.

Friend replied on Sunday, December 19, 2010 11:43 AM

My sincere suggestion is, don't discuss such matters with others, and don't talk to any one on telephone. When you will go to Pakistan, the people like ZARDARI (Thieves & Docaits) will be waiting for you on the way from airport to your home. BE Careful in Pakistam. We overseas people have forgetton all the tricks & chalakian and we are very simple as compared to some docaits in Pakistan. Allah Keep you safe.

careful replied on Sunday, December 19, 2010 11:53 AM

I agree with Friend and Ehtesham ulhaq comments. Do not rush into starting a business in Pakistan.

Once you move back to Pakistan do your research while you are in the country. Like Friend and Ehtesham ulhaq said most overseas people lead a very simple life and are not used to Pakistani way of doing things.

Best wishes and hope things workout for you.

Like others suggested:
1. Do not convert your money to pak rupee, its loosing value by seconds.
2. Do not tell anyone how much you have, I literally mean no one.
3. Don't be greedy, start small.
4. Start with consulting business if you could and keep money safe.
5. Do not trust anyone, I literally mean no one.
5. Listen to everyone but decide what you think is right.
6. Learn law of land (altho there is no law in Pakistan).
7. if plan to have servant, make sure no finance related discussion when he/she around.
8. Watch your surroundings.

not scaring you, just want to make sure that you are "careful".

Dear Bashir sb,

AOA. I'm a Pakistani living in Kuwait from last 30 years. I've just returned from the Dubai-Punjab business conference where all punjab based business tycoons were present. You can write to me at or call me at for feedback. I can strongly suggest you 3-4 options with feasibility for doing business in Pakistan.

Thank you.

Salman Malik replied on Sunday, December 19, 2010 05:13 PM

Dear brother,

Knowing people who have lost all their savings, I'll suggest that please don't advertise your money on forums like this. You are likely to attract criminals.
Do not give your contact details to anyone and do not accept any offer of private/direct communication from anyone through email or phone.

Can't give you specific advise re investment as I am also an overseas Pakistani and don't have much experience of investment in Pakistan. However general advise would be to diversify your investment and never put all your eggs in one basket.

Some good advise from other brothers above.
All the best.

Zia Mian replied on Sunday, December 19, 2010 05:46 PM

Dear Bashir Sahib!
Do give away a lot in Charity because it brings blessings in lifev & increases earnings many fold. But while in Pakistan, please be careful of cheats who will pose to be needy bbut may turn out to be swindlers.
I shall tell you what I had to experience. A patient of Hepatitis C came to me with the reference of a doctor, who, I dont know how got my ph. no.He wanted help for one injection.I obliged. After that every day I stated receiving appeals for help strangely all for Hep. C injections & claiming to be under treatmentin different hospitals. When I tried to investigate, 90% turned out to be fake. A few days later, one person came for help in treatment of a heart patient. Next more than ten requests were all for help in treatment of heart patients from different hospitals, many of them again turned out to be liars. So you have to be careful & choosy in doling out charity although Allah will be aware of your intention ( Niyyat)

Bashir Bhai Sahib! About six month before I was in a similar situation like you. I had returned back home for good with a small saving of about 20 Cror Pak rupees. And iwas wondering which business to start in Pakistan. I studied carefully the business environment in Pakistan and after a careful study decided to embark in a Pharmaceutical Venture. I have planned to setup a pharmaceutical manufacturing company in Lahore with my small capital and with some of my friends. It is a good profitable business with handsome profit margin of about 40% per Annum and on some items more than 60 % per year after giving all commissions and bribes and meagre salaries of poor employees. You can invest your money with me in this business fearlessly. If you are ready reply on this forum, I will contact with you personally after reading your positive response.

It really hurts to see that most of the people are so sure of cheating and swindling in our own country....Only a few positive or true suggestions....
I am jsut wondering how would we attract foreign invesment when all our local people are jsut after money....

jameel replied on Monday, December 20, 2010 08:32 PM

Most of people about 90% when start business after coming back from abroad or get retirement money fail, reason is not cheating of people but lack of experience. i can quote about 10 examples of my close friends and relatives.
After 20 ys stay in Abu Dhabi I dont think it will be time for you to learn some business. my advice is to find some business or job to keep yourself busy and manage your Capital.

Syed replied on Thursday, December 23, 2010 06:32 PM

Dear Sir, with due respect as overseas Pakistani, I can suggest you safest investment in Government Property sector, there is no fear of cheating, grabing or double filing, but that scheme is in Islamabad. If you want to multiply your amount by fair safe and sound investment. call me Syed Sikandar Ali Zaidi Karachi.
