Energy Efficient house construction,

Any suggestions since we have more that 10 hours of load shedding? How can we make energy efficient houses? Also what are the options other than
1. Generator- cost prohibitive due to huge petrol cost.
2. UPS- high battery cost and lack if charge due to long load shedding hours.

anyone knows any architect or civil engineer who have done it? Also any change in house construction material after years of cement/brick construction?
