I asked the above question to my friend who is a senior officer in SNGPL. His reply was as following
“It is very difficult to grant new domestic consumers connections and the situation is getting acute as the time passes. Domestic gas production will fall from the current 4 billion cubic feet per day (cfd) to 2 billion cfd by 2015. Demand, on the other hand, will rise to 8 billion cfd by that time, creating a 6 billion cfd shortfall. It implies after 4-5 years the gas would be available either only for Industrial sector and CNG Stations consumption or for the domestic consumers. Shutting down of industries and the CNG station for almost 2 days per week are the signs which have started to appear.
If every project currently being planned – including a pipeline from Iran, large offshore gas import terminals, and even the politically dicey pipeline from Turkmenistan that passes through Afghanistan – were to be completed on time and deliver exactly as much gas as expected, the country will still be short of 2 billion cfd in 2020.”
I think, the new housing societies which are being developed will face difficulties or will involve fair amount of time(1-3 years) in getting gas connections as the gap between supply and demand is widening day by day.
Is DHA strong enough to get the gas supply any time sooner for its residents…?

Pakistan is probably one of very few countries in developing world which provides pipeline gas to its citizens. Piped gas is not available in India, Sri Lanka and other countries of teh region. Even middle east which is much more rich in gas resources supply gas to its consumers in cylinders.
It is shortsightedness of our previous leaders that piped gas was provided to consumers which has more probability of leakages / wastage. Our country and citizens have to wake up and start utilizing this resource more efficiently. One suggestion can be to stop providing piped gas to domestic consumers and ask consumers to use gas cylinders. It may look strange but this is probably the only way we can survive gas shortages. |

I have lived in Egypt for a few years and there they used geysers which work with gas cylinders. I am sure we can do the same Pakistan. |
