Environment/Health Hazards from Hudaira Drain.,

Dear Friends.

1. As you are aware Hudaira Drain passes through a number of housing projects whose residents sre exposed to serious health hazards.

2. Recently a survey carried out by the concerned authorities found hundreds of industrial units discharging toxic waste into Hudaira Drain.

3. The authority decided to take necessary steps to stop industrial units from discharging the toxic waste into Hudaira Drain.

4. I believe item no. 3 above alone is not enough to remove the environmental threat posed by Hudaira Drain & ensure the well being of hundreds of thousands of residents of different societies through which the drain passes.

5. I urge the concerned authorities of LDA to look into possibility of converting HUDAIRA DRAIN from an OPEN DRAIN to DRAIN PIPE LINE with a possibility of allowing different societies to discharge their sewarage into this pipeline & charging them for the same. This will generate enough revenue for LDA to take care of the operation & maintenance of such a pipe line.

I request all visitors of this site to kindly comment on this proposal.

Regards.

Not possible or practical to convert Hudiara drain into a Piped Drain as it is too deep and wide plus it is meant to be a storm water drain. Last year when there was lot of rain in Indian Punjab, the hudiara drain was flowing to its brim and there was a possibility of it overflowing from its banks.

Instead, there should be the enforcement of the already existing law that if any society or industrial complex discharges its waste into the drain, they should set up water treatment plants at the disposal points. Treated sewage and industrial waste is not harmful and can be discharged into the drain without any adverse effects on environment.
