Mosquito Control,

These days Dengue fever is playing havoc in Lahore. It is uncertain how long the government will take to control it. In other countries like Thailand it has been around for decades and not going away.

For mosquito control over an area up to 1 acre (8 Kanals) there are Propane based outdoor products available in foreign market. I am surprised that no one is talking about them on TV. These products use propane gas to create carbon dioxide which mimics human breath to attract mosquitoes and then suck them like a vacuum cleaner. I just want to spread the word about such products so that importers would import them and make them available in our local market. Government should make them duty free and arrange for local manufacture of consumables.

These products are not cheap (cost between $300 to $700) but even if they are used only by affluent people that will decrease the overall number of patients/carriers thereby helping every body in the society due to reduced spread of disease. The best brand I have been able to search over the internet is "Mosquito Magnet" with proven record of mosquito control. It can clean up mosquitoes not only from the primary house but also from all the immediate neighbor houses. Other brands are probably less effective or not effective at all. I really don't agree with the concept of mosquito megnat, as mosquito attack living beings through body heat rather then CO2, 2nd even if i accept the theory, when does mosquito's enter the mouth or nose (CO2 exhaling location in humans)? If this concept were truth then mosquito controllers which hanging at the shop will never work (as they are based on body heating concept)

Lastly, these products are not available in pakistan

Several countries have successfully controlled dengue and other mosquito related endemics by steps like following...

• Raise general public awareness on the critical role of stale water containers in breeding of dengue carrier mosquitoes.

In urban areas the dengue carrier mosquitoes usually don't travel farther than 50 meters in their whole lifetime. So people should know that their culprit is quite likely bred in/on/near their own property.

Several governments require by law the residents to keep their properties clear of potential stale water containers, actively enforced by surprise inspections, with punishments like heavy fines and even jail time in some countries

• Properly chlorinate domestic water supply, to control larvae infestations in water storage tanks

• For large water bodies which cannot be drained, like water reservoirs and rice paddies, seed-in mosquito larvae predators (like Mesocyclops)

• Encourage culture of using mosquito-nets in beds, windows and doors

• Aggressively hunt information of dengue infected patients and then fully inspect and treat like 100 meters radius from their likely infection spot

Naveed you have mentioned very important points that can be useful for all of us. We certainly hope that our society will be able to eventually control it using the very steps you have mentioned.

The above post is supposed to be an added measure only. Until this issue is over the problem is that we have control over our house but not over our neighboring houses. This is where this machine can help and let us continue to enjoy our backyard/lawn etc and be more relaxed in keeping windows open. Since your opinion is highly respected, I would appreciate if you can give comments on how effective this product seems to be based on the links provided and if you see any drawbacks in its use.

@ Waqar, yes dear this product is not available in the local market but the very purpose of this post was to encourage importers to make it available.

Dear NY.

If by 'public awareness' you meant adult awareness than trust me every one knows how mosquito thrives, but IMO it is matter of habits.
We need to start teaching our children to not throw trash in streets.
I live in Bahria and i see children throwing sweet raps, cola tins etc. in street, when i try to teach them it is bad habit, they not only refuse but also think i'm an alien.
I wonder how many of us tell their children not to dirty the streets, i believe non. SO than suffer... why complain?
Affluent overseas Pakistanis cannot help you to keep your streets clean.

Children follow what their parents do. Same issue in my street. Many of my neighbors prefer to throw litter wherever they can, instead hiring a service mere 150/month which pick litter daily. Can this nation learn ?
