Hallow Concrete Blocks Vs Bricks,

(68827)
Sunday, November 20, 2011 03:59 PM

Today, I was an under construction house being built with hallow cemented blocks in stead of normal bricks. These concrete blocks are manufactured by NLC and one block is sufficient for 9 bricks of place.I was told that these concrete slabs are more solid yet cheaper than bricks and keep the temperature of the house low by 35 % in summers.

How good or bad is this construction material ?

Please share if have an experience or knowledge.

Khan replied on Sunday, November 20, 2011 07:55 PM

Partly correct. These blocks are not load bearing. The load of thew concrete roof and then the first floor can not be borne by these blocks. You have to have pillars to support the roff and first floor.

Dear Aamir,

Please let us know the cost ratio of hollow cemented blocks verses bricks. It is indeed a very good option and brothers on the forum are requested to give their expert opinion. In Karachi, 100% construction is done with these blocks and there is no such like problem indicated by Brother Khan. Moreover kindly let us know how and where to contact NLC in Islamabad for the purpose.

Regards

Please follow the link given below and you will have your all questions answered regarding hollow concrete blocks.

http://nlcpearl.com/

Price ratio:-

To construct one kanal house, generally 130,000 bricks are required which comes out to be Approx Rs. 10 lacs in terms of price for Darja Awal bricks. The expenditure of hollow blocks for the same number of bricks is even less than 6 lacs.

Ali Doha replied on Monday, November 21, 2011 06:11 AM

Mr. Tahir can you update on Concrete Block Prices of both Hollow & Solid Blocks . Above given web site rates are not available.

Tahir replied on Monday, November 21, 2011 06:29 AM

One load bearing hollow block after reaching your construction site costs Rs.40. Non load bearing hallow block is way less than that.

I am sorry I don't know the price of solid concrete block.

Haroon replied on Monday, November 21, 2011 08:01 AM

Comparison between Hollow blocks and Bricks and respective rates of NLC products as received on my inquiry is given below for info all Brothers.
......................................................................

Bricks 130,000 = Blocks 14,857 pcs

quantity 8.75 bricks = 1 blocks 8x8x16 (1900-psi)

price Brick Rs. 7 * 8.75 = 61.25 at site
Price Block Rs. 45/pc at site

comparison = 16.25 ( cost difference of bricks and blocks on site)
Advantages of Blocks:
- PSI 1900 where as brick has 800
- all blocks are equal in shape where as bricks are all d-shape
- plaster mortar control in blocks where as bricks consume plaster
- Blocks prevent moisture

looking forward for your reply

@ Haroon,

What about the cost of filling hollow space ? or it should left hollow ??

Tahir replied on Monday, November 21, 2011 08:32 AM

Hollow space is left as it is. That's why it works as an insulated wall.

@Aamir.

1. Bricks are used for "Load Bearing Walls" construction because of Excellent Compressive Strength of Bricks. Overall cost of this type of construction is much less than the "Frame Structure" construction. This is why this type of construction is popular & common.

2. Compressive Strength of Hollow Blocks is very poor. They are used in "Frame Structure" construction where Frame ( Columns & Beams) bear the load & hollow blocks simply fill the gaps. This type of construction is costlier than load bearing walls type construction. It is usually used for High Rise Buildings or in areas prone to Earth Quakes.

3. Yes hollow blocks do provide thermal insulation because of the air trapped inside them.

4. If someone can afford it is advisable to go for "Frame Structurë" type of construction.

Regards.

@ Haroon ; But after adding cost of pillars and beams for load sharing total cost of Block construction is more than bricks however with advantages.

Kindly correct me if I am wrong, block has a limited life but bricks, long life. Block are not as durable as bricks. Centuries year old Bricks made building are still sustaining but blocks have maximum 25 - 30 years life.

I think only civil/construction or structure engineer can opine better on the subject in question
