Salam,

I am the designer of this project, and anybody can reach me at

Dear MAS, your point about 18000 has a little glicth, it is not GW, it is GWH that is a unit of Energy. bare MW or GW are units of power. Energy is product of power and time. it is a multiple of KWH that is commonly called "Unit" in Pakistan.

I would invite you to go thru full presentation shared at this link:

http://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3x1Nmk1zl5tRDFoLW1hVmJUOGV5NUpmaEhjSmpmUQ/edit

It has answers to most of your questions. more questions are welcome.

Soan dam's power potential is much more than 18000 GWH. as it is equivalent of 2.5 kalabagh dams stacked on top of each other, using 64 MAF flow of Indus at Tarbela without any spillway wastage of flood water.

Indus river doesn't contribute to irrigation between Tarbela and attock. during flood season, water can be diverted per request of provinces to be released back in winter. diversion is not permanent and gates can be switched to release water in either direction.

Soan Link Canal is about the size of Ghazi Baroth canal, only with slightly more slope. This canal alone can generate 4500+ MW of power during summer. rest of power will come from releasing water back to Indus. which will be slower, per demand but water involved is smae amount and available head is 1.5x,so Net energy will be 1.5 times more on exit, @ ~2200 MW.

frankly, this Project is too good to ignore, and you may witness this in coming days. I couldn't believe its numbers at first go, but they'r real.

regards

thanks Mr Rehman. the slid presentation is very good. WE have to submit to the GOVT of Punjab . any one can submit to the chamber of Lahore and Karachi..

Dear Inam, I stand corrected regarding the difference between GW and GWH. I did not know that. As per your presentation 18000 GWH is the total energy production over an entire year for this project. Tarbela produces approximately 3.5 GW. Converting it into GWH for the entire year Tarbela comes at 3.5 x 365 x 24 = 30660 GWH. So Tarbela is still bigger in terms of energy production. Am I correct?

Your complete presentation is far more convincing than the attachment on this page. Congratulations on your work. Just as an observation I would mention that the proposed lake area of 1230 Sq Km is five times larger than Tarbela's. Is'nt it too much land to spare? I don't know. May be it is worth avoiding floods. I wish you and our country best of luck.

Now it come to the right direction . MAS i am not expert in all this. only i want we all should discuses the thing which improve our info and help full for all.

Thank for an idea badly needed for the country. Can some expert throw some light on the feasibility and efficacy of these projects. Soan seems to be most promising but the point remains that how to get 1230 km2 and how many people would be displaced?

Sorry for spelling mistakes but I hope that the message is clear and we could proceed forward on this idea for a meaningful discussion and action.Government of Pakistan (Ministry of water and power) is requested to consider the proposal for serious analysis please.

Tarbela doesn't operate at peak performance around the year. during winter it drops to below 1000 MW. its annual figure for energy is 13952.83 GWH.

Soan lake will fill the broken landscape of Soan gorge. annual floods inundate much much more area throughout Pakistan so this dam will make them safer. for comparison, Chashma barrage's reservoir area is about 600 sq km, for just half MAF storage, 70 times smaller than Soan option.
similarly Manchar lake has area of 520 sq km for 100 times less storage.
for a project that can earn 90 billion dollars annually, this price is not big enough. Like brother Malik Majeed mentioned above, People of area know about the dam for half a century. govt must relocate them to safer areas with their water credit and fertile lands. with so much extra water, it won't be a problem for the govt. this will be a major consideration during the detailed planning.

any one tell about the soan are is it good land agricultural r no agricultural. after dam all land will go in the dam.

Soan land is broken platue with mix of irrigated and Arid farming. More than half of Soan lake area will only be used during extreme flood case, and will be available for seasonal cropping like Siran Pocket of Tarbela.
