I wish to correct my friend. It is not 225 sq. yards but 225 sq feet that make up one marla. For sq. yards it is 25 sq yards that make one marla.

In Lahore district 1 marla is 25 Sq. Yards (or 225 Sq. Feet)
In all other districts of Punjab 1 marla is 30.25 Sq. Yards (or 272.25 Sq. Feet)

There is a severe dichotomy in the area that is defined in the Kanal. As a matter of fact one Kanal is actually equal to 20 Marlas or 605 Sq Yards or 5445 Sq Feet. But in our societies, a new scheme is defined which is absolutely contrary to the true measurements.

What our societies / authorities are presently following is as follows:

1 Kanal = 500 Sq Yds
1 Kanal = 20 Marlas
Therefore 20 Marlas = 500 Sq Yds
1 Marla = 25 Sq Yds
1 Marla = 25 (3X3) Sq Feet = 225 Sq Feet

So if you want to convert Sq Yds into Marla then simply divide (____) Sq Yds by 25. For example you are being offered 1000 Sq Yds then divide 1000 by 25 which is equal to 40 Marlas. BUT PLEASE REMEMBER THESE MEASUREMENTS ARE SOLELY FOR SOCIETIES. IF YOU ARE BUYING RAW LAND THAT IS UNDEVELOPED THEN PLEASE USE FOLLOWING FORMULA:

1 Kanal = 605 Sq Yds
1 Kanal = 20 Marlas
Therefore 20 Marlas = 605 Sq Yds
1 Marla = 30.25 Sq Yds
1 Marla = 30.25 (3X3) Sq Feet = 272.25 Sq Feet

So if you want to convert Sq Yds (Raw/Undeveloped Land) into Marla then simply divide (____) Sq Yds by 30.25 (Must use calculator). For example you are being offered 1000 Sq Yds then divide 1000 by 30.25 which is equal to 33.06 Marlas.

SO FOR DEVELOPED/SOCIETIES PLOTS DIVIDE ____ SQ YDS BY 25 AND
FOR RAW / IRRIGATION LAND DIVIDE ____ SQ YDS BY 30.25

(a) A standard One Marla is 16.5 x 16.5 feet = 272.25 sq feet.
(b) 20 marlas = 1 Kanal = 5,445 sq feet.
(c) 08 Kanals = 1 acre = 43,560 sq feet.
