The Senate Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs recently delved into the crucial aspects of enhancing railway connectivity for Gwadar Port with ML-1 and Quetta, as highlighted in a leading newspaper on January 18. The committee meeting addressed the upcoming rail links integral to connecting Gwadar Port with ML-1 and Quetta, with the land acquisition for this strategic project divided into three phases. The first phase has concluded, and the ongoing second phase is set to be completed soon. Recognizing the pivotal role of railway connectivity in the development of Gwadar Port and Pakistan Railways, the Committee directed Pakistan Railways to promptly prepare the PC-1 for the project for expeditious approval.


In addition to discussing the railway connectivity plans, the Committee received insights into the Gwadar Port Master Plan, outlining the land acquired by the Port Authority thus far. The Master Plan encompasses a multi-use area and port industrial zone, with 2,350 acres already acquired and an additional 19,121 acres yet to be secured. Senator Rubina Khalid emphasized the need for a robust industrial waste plan to safeguard the Gwadar sea from pollutants, deeming it a necessity in the overall development strategy.

In Islamabad, Caretaker Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Minister Muhammad Sami Saeed recently announced significant progress under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). A total of 36 projects, valued at a combined USD 24 billion, have been completed, with an additional 22 projects currently in progress, as reported on January 2 by a reliable news source.


Minister Saeed provided specific updates on the developments in Gwadar, highlighting achievements such as the finalization of the master plan for Gwadar City, advancements on the East Expressway, and the anticipated completion of an international airport in June. These accomplishments underscore substantial advancements in the region.


Emphasizing CPEC's pivotal role in the growth of Gwadar City and Gwadar Port, Minister Saeed highlighted the completion of the aforementioned 36 projects and ongoing construction of 22 projects with a budget of USD 5 billion. Negotiations are also underway for 26 projects, totaling USD 27 billion, within the CPEC framework. Additionally, 27 projects dedicated to the social and economic development of Balochistan are actively progressing.


Minister Saeed further emphasized the commitment to Balochistan's development, pointing out a significant allocation in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). The current year's PSDP stands at PKR 950 billion, with PKR 400 billion allocated to national projects. Noteworthy is the allocation of 15% of the program to Balochistan and an additional 14% earmarked for province-specific projects, totaling PKR 285 billion. These funds are directed towards various connectivity, roads, and water projects, including several dam projects.

Gwadar: A significant leap in the region's healthcare sector was marked by the recent opening of the Pak-China Friendship Hospital in Gwadar, a collaborative effort under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), as reported on December 20.


In an update by Adnan Khan, Socio-Economic Development Specialist at the Pak-China Economic Corridor Centre of Excellence, upcoming CPEC initiatives, including the transformative Green Corridor, Digital Corridor, and Health Corridor, were outlined. These initiatives aim to usher in a new era of development in Pakistan, with a primary emphasis on modernizing the nation's healthcare infrastructure.


Beginning operations on December 4, the hospital, backed by a total investment of USD 100 million from the Chinese government, symbolizes the strong bilateral relations between China and Pakistan. Spanning 68 acres, the 300-bed hospital was developed in alignment with the Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) Business Plan. Specialist Khan detailed the hospital's six blocks, housing modern facilities, equipment, and machinery for medical, residential, nursing, paramedical institute, medical college, and central laboratory purposes, showcasing a comprehensive healthcare approach.


Specialist Khan further highlighted that the hospital would significantly reduce the necessity for residents to travel long distances for specialized medical treatments. The broad range of services, covering primary care to specialized treatments, is anticipated to bring about a notable enhancement in the overall health outcomes of the region.


Underlining the strategic significance of the Pak-China Friendship Hospital, Specialist Khan stated, "The establishment of Pak-China Friendship Hospital underscores the transformative impact of international collaborations in addressing vital aspects of public welfare." Equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology and staffed by highly skilled healthcare professionals, the facility is positioned to elevate healthcare standards in Gwadar to an international level.
