KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reported a significant surplus of $397 million in Pakistan's current account for December 2023, leading to an overall surplus of $198 million for the entire second quarter of the fiscal year FY24. The December surplus, attributed to increased exports, higher remittances, and a sharp decline in imports, played a pivotal role in overcoming the urgent economic challenges that had threatened default at the beginning of FY24.


The latest figures released by the SBP on Wednesday revealed that the December surplus contrasted with a $365 million net loss in December 2022. Additional information disclosed that the current account deficit (CAD) for the first half of the current fiscal year was $831 million, a significant reduction from the $3.63 billion recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal year.


The government's efforts resulted in a substantial 77% reduction in the CAD, amounting to $2.8 billion. Financial experts suggest that continued reduction in the CAD could lead to an overall surplus by the end of the fiscal year, although the SBP anticipates a 1.5% GDP deficit. SBP data indicates that the balance of trade in goods and services for the first half of the current fiscal year was $11.382 billion, reflecting a $4.244 billion decrease from the same period in the previous year when it stood at $15.636 billion.


While the first quarter of FY24 (July–Sept) reported a $1.029 billion current account deficit, the second quarter (Oct–Dec) marked a significant turnaround with a $198 million surplus, highlighting a crucial shift in the economy.

Islamabad: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) have joined forces to broaden the tax base and enlist new taxpayers, aiming to bolster the country's tax revenue, as reported in national dailies on January 19.


NADRA Chairman Lt. Gen. Muhammad Munir Afsar underscored the significance of cooperation from the business community in these endeavors during a meeting with a delegation from the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) led by ICCI President Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawari.


In the meeting, NADRA Chairman Afsar provided the business community with insights into the authority's key initiatives geared towards citizen facilitation. He highlighted the NADRA e-Sahulat platform, underscoring its role as a cost-effective e-services platform offering secure payment and collection facilities to citizens. The platform includes over 17,000 active franchisees connected with telecommunication companies and banks, contributing to retailers' income and providing employment opportunities for thousands of youths.


ICCI President Bakhtawari lauded NADRA's efforts to promote digitalization in Pakistan during the meeting. He acknowledged the establishment of Facilitation Desks by the authority in the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry and proposed a similar setup in the ICCI to streamline services for the business community. Expressing concern about the growing burden on existing taxpayers by the FBR, Bakhtawari assured that the business community is willing to cooperate in expanding the tax base.

Commissioner Amir Khattak announced these developments during a meeting held on Wednesday. The CM directed the initiation of road upgrades starting from BCG Square, underscoring the urgency of implementing this directive promptly.

Rawalpindi: A delegation from the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA), led by Director General Saif Anwar Jappa, recently visited the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) offices for discussions on digital recordkeeping and the transition to soft infrastructure, as per a news report on January 17.


During the meeting, the DG briefed the RDA delegation on the LDA's dedication to implementing new measures for more efficient services. Notably, the LDA has successfully digitalized 10 schemes, with ongoing efforts to extend this digitalization to the remaining schemes. The overarching goal of these IT-based reforms is to enhance service delivery for urban residents.


The RDA delegation, in turn, received insights into successful models of various signal-free corridors in Lahore during the briefing. DG Randhawa highlighted completed signal-free corridors, such as those from Jinnah Hospital to Peco Road and Nazaria Pakistan Road, which have significantly improved traffic flow. The positive impact of implementing U-turns and signal-free corridors on traffic management was also acknowledged.

Final Stages of Quetta Safe City Project Signal Progress in Counterterrorism and Policing Modernization


Quetta: The much-anticipated Quetta Safe City Project is on the verge of completion, marking a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and modernize policing, according to news published on January 16.


Under this initiative, over 1,400 cutting-edge Internet Protocol (IP) cameras have been strategically deployed across 255 key locations throughout the city. This extensive surveillance system is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing security measures for the residents of Quetta. The completion of the Safe City Project was personally overseen by Balochistan Chief Minister (CM) Ali Mardan Domki.


The report indicates that the cameras are strategically positioned at all entry and exit points of the provincial capital. The project, nearing its final stages, is anticipated to be inaugurated later this month by the interim chief minister, as disclosed by an official from the CM Secretariat who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak to the media.


Information from the Science and Information Technology Department reveals that the project boasts a state-of-the-art command and control center. This technologically advanced center, staffed with a team of skilled professionals, has been locally designed, emphasizing the province's commitment to technological self-reliance.


The Quetta Safe City Project serves as Pakistan's pioneering operational plan, demonstrating meticulous coordination with various law enforcement agencies. This collaborative effort aims to establish a customized response and immediate action mechanism, thereby enhancing the overall security infrastructure of the city.

Senate Committee Explores Railway Connectivity Plans for Gwadar Port Linking ML-1 and Quetta


The Senate Standing Committee on Maritime Affairs recently delved into the crucial aspects of enhancing railway connectivity for Gwadar Port with ML-1 and Quetta, as highlighted in a leading newspaper on January 18. The committee meeting addressed the upcoming rail links integral to connecting Gwadar Port with ML-1 and Quetta, with the land acquisition for this strategic project divided into three phases. The first phase has concluded, and the ongoing second phase is set to be completed soon. Recognizing the pivotal role of railway connectivity in the development of Gwadar Port and Pakistan Railways, the Committee directed Pakistan Railways to promptly prepare the PC-1 for the project for expeditious approval.


In addition to discussing the railway connectivity plans, the Committee received insights into the Gwadar Port Master Plan, outlining the land acquired by the Port Authority thus far. The Master Plan encompasses a multi-use area and port industrial zone, with 2,350 acres already acquired and an additional 19,121 acres yet to be secured. Senator Rubina Khalid emphasized the need for a robust industrial waste plan to safeguard the Gwadar sea from pollutants, deeming it a necessity in the overall development strategy.
