One-time property tax being considered

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira has said no suggestion on flood tax has been discussed as yet at the federal level while some provinces contemplating a one-time property tax to generate funds for flood-affected areas.

The federal minister was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) FM Radio 98.6 at the LCCI on Saturday. Commenting on trade concessions granted by the European Union he said that it was one of the achievements of the present government that has opened a new window of opportunities for the business community. The government is in contact with the US for winning trade concessions in the larger interests of the economy of the country, he added.

Kaira said that the floods, however, do not mean that we should not pursue our tax reforms agenda, which is the reason that government is going to continue it as per schedule. He said that increased revenue base is in the interest of Pakistan and it has nothing to do with IMF pressure.

He said the government is putting in its best efforts for the revival of the economy that is a solution to a number of problems including unemployment. The government is well aware of the challenges faced by the business community and making all out efforts to resolve these issues. The government is not only taking care of the trade and industry but it is equally mindful of the issues faced by the agriculture sector. It is in contact with international community including China for getting new technologies for the agriculture sector, he said.

The minister said that the recently signed and much criticised Afghan Transit Trade Agreement would not only help curb smuggling but it would pave the way for industrial revival of the country. This is an agreement that would give considerable boost to the domestic industry, he added.

He said the government did not want clash among government institutions and would obey all orders of the courts. The government would, however, exercise its right to appeal or file review petition against judgement but a final decision will even then be of the courts.

Kaira said that sentence awarded to Dr Afia is against the norms of international justice. He said the government was still making full efforts to bring her back to Pakistan under its extradition treaty with the US. The government provided Dr Afia the legal aid to fight her case and the attorneys that pleaded her case were appointed after consultation with her family.

He said the government would welcome any change that is supported by the constitution and strongly oppose any extra constitutional change. He said Musharraf as Pakistani national has right to come back to his country. However, he added, the ex-president would have to appear before courts if required. If he enters politics he will have to face the people of Pakistan, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, the LCCI President Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry said that considering the broader impact of this medium, the LCCI took the initiative to launch its own FM radio channel, which will primarily focus on updating the business community through informative programmes. He said that the LCCI has plan to keep its members and public well informed about the different variations of prices taking place in the stock market, gold market, metal market etc. He said that current currency rates and commodity prices would be shared.

He said that the radio would also present interviews of successful businessmen so that young and emerging entrepreneurs could benefit from their experience and knowledge. Earlier, the federal minister, while inaugurating the LCCI FM Channel paid rich tributes to the LCCI President Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry for taking the initiative of keeping the business community informed about the latest happenings in the business world. Senior Vice President LCCI, Ijaz A Mumtaz, Vice President Faisal Iqbal Sheikh, newly elected office-bearers Shahzad Ali Malik and Sheikh Mohammad Arshad were also present on the occasion.

PR workers awaiting allotments since '80

KARACHI - Pakistan Railway workers, who have paid their total dues of plots at Jumma Goth, are still waiting for the allotments. The plots were announced to be leased by the current Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani in 80s when he was serving as railway minister in General Zia-ul-Haq era.
Talking to The Nation, President Pakistan Railway Labour Federation Manzoor Ahmed Razi appealed to the government to handover the plots to the allottees who have been suffering since long. He lamented that no government since Zia’s regime has taken this issue seriously despite the fact that the poor worker is still suffering a lot.
In 1986, Yousaf Raza Gilani as Railway Minister had launched a housing scheme in Jumma Goth, located between Port Qasim and Landhi, namely Jumma Goth No-15 Gulshan-e-Yousaf Housing Scheme for the railway workers.
He said in 1986, total 3,500 workers out of 10,000 got their plots through Lucky Draw held at Railway Football Stadium in Karachi. According to the scheme, the winning workers were awarded with 120 yards plot each on which they had to pay Rs7,800 in four instalments and Rs15,000 for the plot measuring 240 yards.
The scheme was initiated for the workers from grade-1 to 16, and the land was the property of railway department but later the Railway Housing Society (RHS) bought the said land from the department and had paid the full payment in this regard.
The plots were to be allotted to the winners of the lucky draw after completion of the development works, and the works had been completed in 1990. But so far despite passage of more than two decades, the plots have not been handed over to the workers.

Flood victims to get new houses free of cost, says Shahbaz

* CM tells Defence minister his govt working on a comprehensive rehabilitation plan

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Defence Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar met Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and exchanged views with him on matters of mutual interest on Sunday.

Shahbaz informed the defence minister about relief activities after floods in the province. Shahbaz said the floods had washed away hundreds of thousands of houses, destroyed crops and infrastructure worth billions of rupees in these areas and from the very first day all related departments of the Punjab government were busy providing relief to flood victims, he added.

The chief minister said that after the rescue and relief process, now it is time to rehabilitate them. He said the Punjab government was working on a rehabilitation programme and distributing relief money under the Watan Card scheme in a transparent manner.

He said that philanthropists, welfare organisations, elected members and the police fully participated in relief activities for flood victims and now they were taking part in their rehabilitation as well. Shahbaz said the floods had washed away many villages and the Punjab government was setting up modern villages for them and assured the defence minister that the victims would be given new houses free of cost and the villages would be equipped with modern facilities.

Dear CMY,

It seems that de-merger of Air-Avenue (Urban developers) and DHA is quite near. In this situation, would you please consider the following points for your expert opinion..

1- How is it going to effect the plot-holders (those who have plots purely for home-constructions and have no intentions of sale)??

2- What about the transfer letters issued by DHA? Will Air-Avenue issue deuplicate letters to those plot holder who have been issued allotment letters by DHA? Or there will be different scenario..

3- Will you see any down-fall in the prices of the plots in the coming days..

Thank you.

Please inform the fate of LDA Avenue-1 which is infact the fate of all those poor allotties who have been waiting since long to build a home. But no body there to listen to them or to tell them what wrong they have done. It is worth mentioning here that everone having plot in the scheme is not an investor. People like me do not have many options, rather each passing year is making it more difficult to build a home. It is feard that the plot will ultimately be sold to spend on the education and marriages of children.
