Housing societies’ delegation calls on Shahbaz

LAHORE - A delegation of residents of Ali Park, Nasheman Town and Umer Town, adjacent to the Aashiyana Housing Scheme, Saroba Attari, led by Rana Khalid Mehmood Qadri, called on Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Monday and apprised him of their problems. They demanded provision of sewerage system and sui gas. Talking to the delegation, the CM said that solution of people’s problems is top priority of the Punjab government and all resources are being utilised in this regard.
He said that establishing the Aashiyana Housing Scheme for low-income people is a revolutionary step of the Punjab government for providing shelter to the poor. He directed the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) managing director (MD) to immediately conduct a survey for laying a sewerage system in the localities adjacent to the Aashiyana Housing Scheme. He said that sui gas is under the federal government’s control but the Lahore DCO will contact the SNGPL MD in this regard.

Zero Point Interchange to be inaugurated soon

ISLAMABAD: Capital Development Authority (CDA) has completed the multi-billion project of Zero Point Interchange (ZPI) and made all its portions functional for the traffic, giving final touches to it.

Project Director ZPI, Mumtaz Hussain told APP that Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani is likely to inaugurate the project soon.

He said major portion of the project costing around Rs 3 billion was earlier opened in April while some of the slip roads and loops, which were under construction, have also been made functional for the traffic.

However, the loop giving access to the traffic moving from Faisal Avenue to Kashmir Highway was designed very close to the National Monument and it was feared that it might threaten the nearby structure of the monument.

“To avoid any damage, we have engaged a foreign firm to supply anchors to support the monument tying it with the nearby rocks. The anchor would be erected by mid of June,” he said.

Regarding installation of pedestrian bridges, he said the project has been approved by the CDA and awarded to the Heavy Mechanical Complex (HMC).

All four pedestrian bridges would cost Rs 48 million and the HMC is committed to install these bridges within a short time period.

The official said some alteration has been made in design of the under-construction pedestrian bridge at Islamabad Highway and instead of concrete, the steel girders will be placed on it too. The modification has been made fearing any untoward incident due to huge width of the road.

CM`s directive on housing colony:

Officials willy-nilly making assessment

LAHORE: With `strong reservations` in mind, the authorities concerned are assessing the possibility of converting Wahdat Colony into Ashiana-like housing scheme for government servants already living there on the direction of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Dawn learnt on Sunday.

Built in around 1960, Wahdat Colony is the property of the Punjab government and is the largest amongst several residential colonies for the Punjab government employees in Lahore.

Sources said the chief minister had asked the authorities concerned to prepare a briefing for him after the Action Committee for Property Rights, Wahdat Colony, submitted an application seeking ownership rights for the houses or quarters for those provincial government servants already living there.

The committee sought ownership rights on the pattern of those colonies adopted by the provincial government for allotting houses to widows and poor people in its Ashiana Housing Scheme.

Sources said the officials concerned had on Saturday conducted a survey of Wahdat Colony and two other similar residential quarters, Chauburji and Poonch House, without agreeing to the appeal of giving the place to the `interested parties` against peanuts.

“The idea is scandalous and, if followed, is sure to bring a bad name to the government,” an official said.

He explained that only six to seven per cent lucky government employees were occupying official residential quarters in Lahore and doling out the biggest among them, Wahdat Colony, would be like depriving the Punjab government of its biggest asset.

“The government is running out of even development funds and as to how it would arrange for another colony if this is given to those enjoying the facility for years and now desiring to devour it,” argued the official.

He said that spread over 350 acres out of which 100 acres are encroached upon, the colony is worth trillions of rupees. It has 30kms of roads, five big grounds, 26 internal green belts, one hospital, and a police station. The market value of its outer green belt on Wahdat Road, which is around 60ft wide, is estimated between Rs10 billion and Rs12 billion.

“The colony has all facilities. The roofs of its houses were changed besides repairing its inner roads and building a boundary wall and entrance gates only two months ago,” the official said.

“The colony must be kept for catering to the residential needs of the government servants. And if someone wants to dispose it of, the better way is to generate huge funds by privatising it on market rates instead of giving it in charity,” the official said.

He feared that turning Wahdat Colony into an Ashiana-like scheme was bound to generate similar trend for other official colonies like Chauburji built in 1922, and everywhere in the province. “One must keep future in mind,” he cautioned.

480 houses of the Ashiana Housing Scheme will be completed by July

LAHORE, May 29: Up to 480 houses of the Ashiana Housing Scheme will be completed by the first week of July and will be distributed to the deserving people, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Sunday.

Out of 3,000 houses of the housing scheme only meant for the poor, the first block of 480 houses would be distributed to the poor in July, Mr Sharif told reporters at Saroba Atari, the site of the housing project. He said the scrutiny of applications was under process and it would be ensured that only eligible get houses in the scheme.

He said the Punjab government had materialised the dream of the poor of having their own house through the project first time in the country, says a handout.

He said a permanent system should be evolved for the security, sanitation, maintenance of parks and provision of educational and medical facilities in the scheme. Punjab Land Development Company Chairman Sheikh Allauddin, Members of the Provincial Assembly Mian Naseer Ahmad and Khwaja Imran Nazir and Lahore division officers were also present.

The chief minister said the scheme had been initiated to provide shelter to the poor and the low-income people and after Lahore similar schemes would be started in other cities of the province as well. He said that a quota had been allocated for the disabled, widows, orphans and the families of the martyrs in the scheme.

The chief minister said high standard construction work was in progress in the scheme and top quality material was being used for the construction of houses. He said that balloting for the allotment of houses in the scheme had been conducted in a transparent manner. He said that particulars of the allotment holders were now being verified and people from the public and private sectors were engaged in this process which was also being carried out in a transparent manner.

He said that schools, vocational centres, hospitals, playgrounds, gymnasium and modern civic amenities were being provided in Ashiana Housing Scheme.

The chief minister inspected two fully completed houses and appreciated their design and standard.
